ember - Overview

Product design meets the streets.
A skateboard brand, back from "when we were young"

Designed skateboard decks and created a brand, back from "when we were young"

Influenced by the 90s and "the noughties" (00s) skate scene with a mix of punk/pop-punk, and MTV’s cultural free-for-all. We handcrafted skateboard decks from scratch and laser-engraved them with custom designs.

I led the creation of a brand, I designed the social assets, posters and adverts, along side two other colleagues, we reached out to aspiring local artists, skaters, photographers, and design students under "ember" banner to help bring the project to live. I coordinated the work from start to finish.
It was free and open, with no set barriers, but at the same time, driven by a clear focus on merging simplistic product design with gnarly, punk, rebellious branding rooted in the turn of the century.

The brand was created over a decade ago, when social media was still awkwardly figuring itself out, and magazines and TV were clinging to their last moments as the most relevant broadcast mediums.
A proper brand book was never created; it fits the brand more than a book would.

Sponge for culture aspiration

We invited young aspiring artists and students of product design, graphic design, and visual communication to create their own interpretation of an “ember” typography logo. The brief encouraged them to draw inspiration from their childhoods - what was popular in their surroundings at the time - or simply to follow their creative instincts. They were free to express themselves through illustration, graphic design, 3D, or any medium of their choice, with only a subtle nudge toward the identity influences of ember.

All back when Instagram looked like this

and TVs like that

The vision drew on legendary skate brands and subcultural icons like ZERO, Fallen, Thrasher Magazine, and the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series, alongside the unforgettable music that defined that era.
